Fuming or smoking wood floor is the process of exposing wood planks to ammonia in a sealed and contained chamber. Wood reacts to ammonia by drawing tannins (usually located deeper into the wood) to the surface naturally and randomly creating areas that are darker and richer than others throughout the wood planks. The final patina depends on the type of wood used, the air mix in the chamber and the outside environment.
The smoke process creates darker tones, making the wood look older and weathered while bringing out the natural grain of the wood. The closer the tannins are to the surface, the darker the wood will appear. The color depth varies based on the length the wood has been exposed to the ammonia. The results look more attractive, refined and luxurious than when wood floors are stained.
Bleached Wood
Solid hardwood floors are the most desired type of flooring material among homeowners. Solid wood floors create a warm and welcoming environment; they are eye-pleasing, durable and fairly easy to maintain. And they add value and appeal to a home.
